Certified Adult, Pending Review

Print the kit straight from this page (File ~ Print ~ Save as PDF).

Back to the kit pageAll printable kits

Print the certificate first and fill it in badly, on purpose ~ it belongs on the fridge, not in a frame. Work through the competency cards whenever you catch yourself doing something suspiciously capable, and use the first-time walkthrough page the next time you have to do a grown-up task you have never done before. The quarterly review is for looking back and noticing you did, in fact, learn things.

The certificate

Fill this in with a pen. Do not print it neatly. The wobbliness is part of the credential.

This certifies that ~ (your name, written with unearned confidence)
has been operating as an adult since ~ (a date you are choosing generously)
Areas of demonstrated competence ~ (list three, they can be small)
Areas still pending review ~ (list three, be honest, this is the funny part)
Known to be good at ~ (one thing you would defend in an argument)
Officially still figuring out ~ (one thing, no shame attached)
This certificate expires ~ (never; adulthood has no renewal date, only surprises)
Signed, the holder ~
Witnessed by ~ (someone who has seen you handle something well)

Competency cards

Thirty cards, each one a thing that quietly counts. Tick them off over a year. The point is not the score ~ it is noticing that the evidence has been piling up the whole time.

Made a phone call you had been dreading for over a week

The call took four minutes. The dread took nine days. Note the ratio.

Read a contract all the way to the end before signing it

Including the part in the smaller type. Especially that part.

Cooked a meal from what was already in the house

Resourcefulness disguised as an empty fridge.

Booked a doctor or dentist appointment without being nagged

Said no to a plan you did not want to attend, without inventing an illness

The honest no is a senior-level skill.

Paid a bill on the day it arrived instead of on the day it threatened you

Asked for help with something you were embarrassed not to know

Everyone had to be told once. You just did it out loud.

Returned something within the return window

Wrote down a password somewhere safer than a sticky note

Apologized properly, without the word "but" doing damage control

Cleaned a thing that was not visible to guests

The fridge shelf nobody would have judged you for. Elite.

Went to bed instead of starting the next episode

Handled a delivery problem without rehearsing the argument for an hour first

Changed a lightbulb, a filter, or a battery before it became urgent

Kept a plant alive for a full season

One plant. It counts. It absolutely counts.

Told someone what you actually wanted for your birthday

Checked your bank balance on purpose rather than by accident

Left a party at the time you meant to leave

Filed a piece of paper in the place papers go

Made a follow-up appointment while still standing at the desk

Cutting out the future phone call. Devious efficiency.

Cancelled a subscription you had been paying for out of guilt

Sent the email instead of drafting it eleven times

Ate a vegetable that required preparation

Put the thing back where the thing lives

Admitted you were wrong before being cornered into it

Did the laundry step everybody skips ~ actually putting it away

The chair is empty. Somewhere, a bell rings.

Set a reminder that later saved you

Drank water for a reason other than swallowing a pill

Let a friend be sad without trying to immediately fix it

Read the instructions before the second attempt rather than the fourth

Doing a grown-up thing for the first time

Fill this in before you attempt any task you have never done. It turns a vague fear into about six answerable questions, which is most of the battle.

The thing I have to do
Why it feels bigger than it is
Who has definitely done this before and would tell me how (a person, a helpline, an official website)
The single first step ~ small enough that it takes under ten minutes
What I need in front of me before I start (documents, numbers, account details)
What is the actual worst realistic outcome ~ written out, because it shrinks on paper
What happens if I do nothing ~ usually worse, and worth naming
The deadline, if there is a real one
Done. What I now know that I did not know before ~

Quarterly review

Four times a year, take five minutes. This is the only performance review where you are also the one handing out the raise.

On the pending review

Everybody is issued the credential without the training. There is no ceremony, no handbook, and no moment where somebody confirms you are doing it right.

So the feeling of being an impostor at adulthood is not a personal defect. It is the standard experience, held privately by nearly everyone in the room, all of whom assume they are the only one.

The competency cards exist because the evidence is genuinely there and nobody ever counts it. You handle things constantly. You just do not file the receipts.

Pending review is not a failing grade. It is the permanent, honest status of every adult who is still paying attention, and the alternative ~ believing you have it fully sorted ~ is considerably worse company.

Questions

Is this a joke kit or a useful one?

Both, on purpose. The certificate is funny and the first-time walkthrough page is genuinely the thing people use most. The humor is what gets the kit off the shelf on a day the useful part is needed.

Why 30 cards when the pack lists more ideas?

The thirty cards are drawn from a deeper hand-written library so the delivered set is curated rather than padded. Every card in the pack is distinct and the same thirty print every time.

Can I give this as a gift?

It is one of the better uses for it ~ a graduation, a first apartment, a first real job. Fill in the witnessed-by line yourself before you hand it over.
